Is not official yet, but we can install an Alpha version of VLC Player on our Nokia N900. Unfortunately, it still has some bugs that will be solved with the final version.
Still not available in any repository, of course, so to install it we must follow the following steps:
libvlc5_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb
vlc-nox_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb
vlc-player-nox_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb
vlc-player_1.1.0~git5935-1_armel.deb
dpkg-i /ruta_al_ archivo / filename.deb
Now we can run VLC, type:
vlc /ruta_al_archivo
ie,
vlc /home/user/MyDocs/archivo.avi

It is opening everything I throw at it, but some high quality SD DVD rips in h264 just bog. I’m going to guess no support for video acceleration?

To install VLC on your N900, you can try one of the following methods (1st for most users, 2nd for more advanced ones):
1st method) Go to Menu->Application Manager and, in the applications catalog, add VLC repository as follows:
- Catalog name: VLC
- Web address: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo
- Distribution: fremantle
- Components: free
After that, you can find vlc in the list of downloadable apps.
2nd method) Open the following file in X-Terminal, as root (sudo gainroot): /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list, and add the following line, using your favorite editor:
deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo fremantle free
Save the file and then run:
apt-get update && apt-get install -y vlc

i installed on my n900. it installed fine. but once i initiate the program, it hangs and i have to reboot. i think, there needs to be still number of bug removal required.

vlc is the only requirement for GMote. can the N900 run gmote-server?
