I work as a mechatronics engineer at Benteler Engineering Services and I’ve successfully used the tuner function of my N900 to verify the rotating speed of a brushless DC motor.
According to the software of the motor driver the motor was supposedly spinning at 18660 rpm. Since that is hard to verify when it is lying on a desk, we decided to use the tuner on my N900 to measure the frequency of the noise it was creating. This turned out to be 306 Hz, which equals 306*60=18360 rpm.
It is just great fun to apply the functions of this phone to solve engineering problems!!
