Works just like the JoikuSpot application, though with less functionality. The great difference is that Mobile HotSpot is free!!!.

Mobile HotSpot‘s functioning is very simple:

  • Install Mobile HotSpot (customize your kernel automatically)
  • Restart N900
  • Turn off all connections
  • Launch Mobile HotSpot
  • Set parameters (connection with the use and any WEP)
  • Press Start
  •

Mobile HotSpot is available in the Extras-Devel/Testing repository. To learn more about repositories, click here.

I am gettin “Hotspot unable to start” error. Can anyone tell me how to solve this?

    2. Bryan says:

I was getting the same error when my cpu was overclocked once flashed back to original kernel program works fine.

    3. AE says:

      “HotSpot failed to start”

    4. ii_2000 says:

I’ve installed it, rebooted the phone and the application started. But I was not able to connect my laptop to it – it was connection timeout error all the time. Plus the whole phone UI became kinda crooked – list items started to overlap each other, some settings screens looked scrambled, etc. So I uninstalled it.

Mobile HotSpot doesn’t work. I bought JoikuSpot, which doesn’t work either.

So I only have problems. :-(

    8. AE says:

Oh no~ What’s wrong with JoikuSpot?

    9. do says:

First I had the same error: Failed to start.

After closed all connections and rename my hostname it works. First I had N900 @ …, I changed it to ‘test’ and it works..

    10. do says:

so don’t use any strange charecters in the hostname.

    11. Deafboy says:

Just install custom kernel on your own. It can be easily found in maemo.org / Download, by searching for “kernel”. Then restart the phone.
Mobile hotspot should work then. I have successfully created wifi network, but it is only ad-hoc network. No gprs connection from phone is available for now. I have my hostname set to N900, so no special characters.

I have also realised that mobilehotspot was removed from maemo stable reposiory few days ago.

    12. Cooriander says:

I got Mobile HotSpot to work on my macbook pro (leopard) – but I can’t get Joiku premium to work. Go figure!

I installed the boosted kernel – rebooted, piddled with the DHCP settings (renew lease a few times) on my mac and then finally it worked. I had previously spent hours and hours trying to get joiku to work – and couldn’t… at the time I didn’t know about this FREE version… thank you so much!!!

    13. CyberianTiger says:

I had expected to have to fiddle with it to make it all work.

But no, just clicking a button did work for me.

Shame no one has managed to make the n900 do AP mode yet.

Hey guys, i downloaded mobilehotspot and works great. is it possible to use to broadcast a wifi connection instead of At&t’s internet?

    20. Mark says:

For me it seems to load up and I can connect to it with my Mac. The problem is that I still can’t seem to browse the internet on my Mac. The wifi shows up as a ‘Computer to computer’ network instead of the normal wifi connection. Second on my Mac it says: ‘Airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet.’

Can someone please help me fix?

      Many thanks!

Great tool….. for when you are on the road
we use it with no problems.
if you follow the instructions “switch off all connections” all should be ok.
we normally restart the phone then close bluetooth and wap connections,
      run mobile hotspot.

      works every time

thanks to the developer for this one

    23. ERROR: Hotspot unable to start

      FIX:
From N900 App Manager, do this:
      Uninstall hotspot.
Install: Enhanced Linux kernel for power users (settings). (stable repository, requires no special setup)
      Install: MobileHotSpot
      Reboot N900

Turn off all connections, or only connect to cellular provider (NOT WIFI)
      Launch Mobile HotSpot
Press Start – wait until button turns from Blue [initializing], and text changes to “stop” – then connect your PC.

Once everything is working, THEN play with default settings such as network name, and WEP. The install details for MobileHotSpot seems misleading, or out of date, because it doesn’t appear to install necessary kernel. once latest kernel is installed, app works like a charm.

    24. Martin Burman says:

      Thanks mr Mike Stewart!

I followed these instructions and MobileHotSpot began to work.
      Decent performance too!
      Bye-bye dongle.

    25. tamzid says:

hey mike would u plz tell me how to change the connection from “data plan” to wifi? i wanna connect it through my wlan not through data (the mobile operator provider), couse it costs a lot….!! and what to put in encryption?

      thanks n regards.

    26. Rudie van Niekerk says:

Hey Guys, could someone plse help, after I installed Enhanced Kernel drivers to get Hotspot working my camera on the N900 doesn’t start up it says OPERATION FAILED, I installed Bless N900 also no go.

Are there any other Kernell Drivers that will work with Nokia drivers.

    27. tamzid says:

I need a reply guys…..! What could be done??

    28. Hello says:

      Late reply..

Rudie, you need to uninstall the fcam drivers that comes with the BlessN900 installation. The camera doesn’t start up because the fcam drivers don’t work with the current stable version of the power kernel (v2.6.28-maemo42).

    29. Tim says:

I installed the enhanced linux kernel, as posted above, then installed mobile hotstop. I wanted to reboot the phone, but now it hangs at startup. It shows the nokia booting screen, then goes black, shows the nokia booting screen again, and goes black again. repeats this forever and just wont start up.

Is there anyway this can be fixed!?

    30. Jaydee says:

LONZmn With the bases loaded you struck us out with that answer!

i have this app installed and it seems to work fine (thanks to the everyone that created it – many thanks)

i only get problems when i have used another app that ‘unloads’ the module for the wifi. in which case i have to re-enable the wifi for it to work.

*but* i have never managed to connect via USB only through wifi ad-hoc. i tried hooking Linux (ubuntu x64, debian)

      thanks,

    44. Todd Howe says:

I have the same problem maxmurd describes above.

I’ve restarted my phone, tried starting Mobile Hotspot both with and without my cellular data connection running, and the SSID I picked – ‘linuxphone’ just doesn’t show up in my netbook’s wireless connections list.

What are the chances this has to do with the recent (few weeks back) update to the power kernel? What are the chances Mobile Hotspot is still being maintained?

    45. Todd Howe says:

There’s another newer and sturdier app I heard about at talk.maemo.org called “QT Mobile Hotspot”. Worked for me where this one didn’t.
